How To Achieve The Technique And Songwriting Skills You Have Always Dreamed Of... Even If You Feel Completely Stuck
Are you currently jumping from exercise to another without any clear targets?
Has it been a long time since you had a major breakthrough in your guitar playing?
Are you tired of practicing and not getting the results you want?
I know how it feels like to be in your situation…
During my career I have hit multiple plateaus which always seemed harder and harder to break through. I tried to stay positive, but every time I hit another brick wall on my progress, I thought that there’s no way around this, and that’s how I got bored of guitar playing..
I was just devastated as I thought I’ve reached the limits of my skills..
I thought that I could never play my favorite songs, which I worked so hard towards..
I thought that I could never join a band with skilled members and create the music I always wanted…
I thought that I could never have a career in music…
After being stuck for years, I was ready to give up.
But then, I started to notice some of my friends (who I thought weren’t as talented as me) reaching their goals in guitar playing. I thought that some of them could never play even intermediate riffs or leads, but now they were rapidly learning those songs that I couldn’t currently play. I was confused as I always thought that you had to be naturally talented to learn to play tight riffs or emotional solos.
My friends were constantly surprising me with what they had just learned, even when they seemed to have no natural talent and I knew that some of them practiced only under an hour a day.
I felt something really wrong with my situation. I practiced several hours a day, watching instructional videos made by the best guitarists I could find, and still I was stuck with my improvement while my friends were becoming better guitarists every day.
I couldn’t take it any longer so I swallowed my pride and asked my friend how he gets really good results even when he practices just an hour a day. He laughed a bit and said that he was kind of waiting when I would ask it. He told me that he had been taking guitar lessons from a really good metal teacher and that he had learned in the past months how to practice efficiently. He had also followed my frustration of not getting improvements but didn’t want to point out the things I was doing wrong as I would most likely get offended.
Long story short: I started taking lessons from another really good metal teacher and I learned how to practice efficiently, how to avoid common pitfalls for guitarists… I learned rhythm, timing, theory and all of the essential skills which I needed to become a professional guitarist. And I did become a professional guitarist. I’m telling you my story because I don’t want anyone else to go through the pain I did.
I’m a professional guitar teacher and I have helped hundreds of guitarists to improve their technique and songwriting skills while avoiding the mistakes I did.
The "Self-taught trap"
Many guitarists are limiting themselves without even knowing it. They are improving very slowly (if at all) by trial and error.
You will spend years practicing alone and hoping that you’re one of the few lucky ones who makes it “self-taught”?
Practicing can be frustrating, especially if you don’t get the results that you are hoping for. I already wasted so many years for practicing the wrong exercises the wrong way.. I practiced up to 8 hours a day and still didn’t see the improvements that I should get.
I had the idea that learning by myself is the best way to move forward if I want to become a professional guitarist with unique sound. I had the idea that if I take lessons, it would hurt my playing in some weird way.
This idea was actually my biggest limitation.
I was under the impression that everything I would even need could be found online.
However, there few problems to this idea…
I didn’t know what are the best lessons I should focus on.
I didn’t have any structure in my practicing, I was just learning the most recent exercise I could find.
Later I found out, that video lessons that are found online aren’t personalized or targeted to your current situation. Most of the time the lessons are even made by a guitarist without any teaching experience and this can really hurt your playing when they tell you “advice” which doesn’t have any proof of working for anyone else than someone with a very specific issue, for example:
“To down pick fast, you have to hold the pick a certain way”
This advice would work for the 1% who actually are gripping the pick the wrong way. If you try to change the pick grip without having any problems in your grip, you will actually do damage to your technique and progress.
To become a better guitarist, you need assistance from someone who:
- Knows exactly what you need to do in order to advance to the next level.
- Can see the crucial flaws in your technique and correct them.
- Points out the bad practice habits that are limiting your progress.
- Already knows the whole process of practicing guitar inside out; the mistakes that limit you and the practice methods that work for your playing style.
Get Better Results From The Same Amount Of Practice
The key to effective practicing is to have an experienced guitar teacher to look at your playing and give you personalized instructions for what you need to do.
After you get personalized instructions, the whole practicing process becomes so much more effective. If you previously spent hours on learning a new exercise, you should know that you can get better results from 15 minutes of concentrated practice when you put your focus on the right things.
You will be surprised how easy guitar playing actually is, once you get someone to tell you what to practice and how.
Guitar Lessons Specialized In Metal
To learn metal guitar, you NEED to have a metal guitar teacher.
You might have taken lessons from the classic “blues-rock teacher”. Did you learn anything useful for metal except perhaps some pentatonic’s and bends?
If you want to become a great metal guitarist, you need a teacher who focuses on metal guitar techniques and theory. For several years, I have put all of my focus on metal guitar; fast and heavy riffs and leads.
Thrash metal, death metal, heavy metal, black metal, you name it..
